Ageless style: Pinstripes

Wardrobe staples for everyone by fashion stylist Arabella Greenhill

The phrase ‘power dressing’ has been around since the 1980s. Back then, it meant establishing authority in the workplace with oversized suits and shoulder pads.

These days, power dressing is more about how certain clothes make us feel rather than how intimidating we look – and if you want to feel like a boss, you can’t go wrong with a pinstripe. This minimal stripe is no longer just for suits, though, as it has evolved into an everyday print that feels fresh and clean.

PINSTRIPES

  • While you can’t go wrong with the classic colourways – navy, grey and black – less formal choices are cropping up in stores, such as forest greens, reds and bright blues.
  • Give the formal feel of pinstripes a twist by contrasting with laidback pieces for a smart-casual look. For example, team pinstripe trousers with trainers or a pinstripe blazer over a white sweatshirt.
  • Look for pieces with movement, such as this pinstripe Cos dress, or a mid-length pleated style for an elegant take on the trend.
